When the classroom doesn't work: what actually helps?

Over the years, I've worked with many children and young people who were described as "disengaged", "school refusing", "challenging", or "unable to access education". In reality, many of them were overwhelmed, anxious, exhausted, misunderstood, or simply in environments that no longer worked for them.

At Thrive, we believe that when the classroom stops working, the answer is rarely more pressure.

It's usually the opposite.

Slower. Calmer. Safer. More relational. More flexible.

What progress can look like

For some children, progress starts with something as simple as:

  • Arriving at a session without anxiety
  • Holding a conversation
  • Rebuilding trust with adults
  • Completing ten minutes of learning
  • Leaving the house consistently again

Those things matter.

Too often, education becomes focused purely on attendance percentages, hours delivered, or academic output. But many children need re-engagement before attainment.

What 1:1 support can actually do

That's where truly personalised 1:1 support can make a difference. We focus heavily on:

  • Building trust first
  • Creating consistency and routine
  • Adapting around the young person
  • Reducing pressure and emotional overload
  • Recognising small wins early
  • Understanding the "why" behind behaviour

Because children are not machines.

And sometimes a child is not failing education — education has simply stopped fitting the child.

What can change

We've seen young people go from complete disengagement to re-entering learning, rebuilding confidence, and beginning to believe in themselves again.

Not overnight. Not through magic. But through patience, relationships, flexibility, and the right support.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer in education.

But relationships still matter. Consistency still matters. Feeling safe still matters.

And often, that's where progress truly begins.
